Des Moines AMP - AMP | Achieving Maximum Potential

Des Moines AMP

Welcome to the Des Moines AMP page!

       ACHIEVING MAXIMUM POTENTIAL

The Des Moines AMP meets at DHS - Polk County Riverplace, 2309 Euclid Ave, Des Moines, IA every first and third Tuesdays in room 1 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

We serve supper at 5:30pm so if you come early you can be a part of our "meet & eat" activity before the AMP council meeting begins!

Des Moines was the first council formed in 2005 and is one of the largest, most active councils in Iowa. We offer childcare if you are a young adult who has children and also a parent support group for adults who bring their teens to AMP.  Parents, no need to worry about supervision at AMP meetings, there are adult staff and volunteers in the council meeting making sure your teens are safe and appropriate!  Our meetings begin with "Highs & Lows" and youth getting to know each other in a fun activity or ice breaker.  Since we are youth driven it's time to present something the youth want to learn about...topics can be healthy relationships, bullying, college finanial aid, saving & checking accounts or finding a job.  Most topics in AMP focus on skills youth need to become an independant young adult.  We help connect teens to transition services such as Opportunity Passport, Iowa Aftercare, Transition Decision Making and Workforce Development grant programs for youth.  Parents can attend with their youth or teens can bring another youth in care...just know that we understand what your going through...your not alone!

Resources for Polk County youth:

The Opportunity Compass which is a resource map for youth 16-24. This interactive map highlights resources and opportunities for the involvement of teens and young adults in the Polk County area. It provides locations of resources in the following categories: education, employment, support services, immigrant and refugee services, volunteer opportunities, trades and apprenticeships, and activities and interests.

The map currently only has Polk County, but I would encourage those of you in the other counties to assist with the map building and add resources for your areas of Iowa. Under the support services tab there is a category for Foster Care Transition, I am very happy to have advocated for this category and think this can be a great link and resource for our foster youth.    CLICK HERE

So give AMP a try, especially during those cold fall nights...Summer vacation is over, lets get back into the swing of real life!

AMP is a place to learn new things, meet new people and have lots of fun!  Here are some of our members at AMP Council meetings and at community events....
