A 2018 Career Builder survey of 1,000 HR professionals showed that 70 percent use social networking sites to research job candidates. Of those who screen social media, 57 percent say they have discovered inappropriate content that caused them to reject a candidate. Questionable content includes drinking or drug use; discriminatory comments related to race, gender, religion, and other sensitive issues; and overall unprofessional communication skills (badmouthing a current employer, poor spelling/grammar, etc.).

How do you look like a good hire? First, delete or "untag" any content that contains profanity, excessive partying, or contradictions to your resume. Use a profile picture that comes across as friendly, personable, and professional. Don't badmouth former or current employers. Google yourself and see what comes up. The fundamental rule: If you don't want it public, don't post it!
